I think I’m a Sock Knitter Now

I've only knit one pair of socks before and let’s be honest they didn't turn out great. I decided there and then I wasn't a sock person. Well years later I think I have changed my mind; I’ve been seeing some really cute socks on Instagram and thought I’d give it another go. I could still hate them and decide I’m not a hand knit sock person, but I at least have to try. I also realize it will take practice to find the style that suites me best. There are so many different types of hand knit socks maybe I just didn’t knit a pattern that was right for me. I also think I have the knitting skills to be able to knit a better pair than my first attempt. I have mastered Kitchener stitch and short rows, the two things I could barely do when I knit my first pair.

I found this amazing sock designer Summer Lee and just love her patterns. I think part of what I love about her is that she will have a pattern with several different versions. A lot of her patterns have short ankle socks which I think I will like best vs a more traditional longer sock. I also love that she has a wide variety of sizes. I wear a size 6 and I’ve found a lot of patterns smallest size is still a bit too big for my foot. Know that I know her formula I think I will be able to adapt other patterns to fit my foot better. I think the main thing I love about her patterns is that she uses a lot of afterthought heels. One of the main issues with my first pair of socks was the heel, I hated how it looked. I know most heels are designed to stand up to a lot of friction, but since I don’t plan on wearing them with shoes, I’m hoping I can get away with an afterthought heel. I just love the look of them and I’m hoping if I get good enough at socks I will be able to change out any pattern to have an afterthought heel.

The other thing I am looking forward to with socks is that they are so fast to knit up. Part of that could be because I have small feet, but I love the idea of these quick easy projects. I also love the fact that it is a great way to help eat up my crazy yarn stash and all my leftovers. I have so many skeins of yarn that I love but only have 1 skein or can’t picture myself using. I feel like with socks I will be able to use all these single skeins’ multiple times on several socks. I also hope that if I get good enough, I can give them away as gifts as well. Only time will tell if I’m a sock knitter or not, but I’m excited to see if I am.
