I Steeked!
Well I did it, I successfully steeked my Copper Queen Cardigan. Although I have steeked once before it did not go nearly as well and sadly, I never wear that garment. Anyway, this time I really did my research and although I used a nice sticky wool, I reinforced it by hand sewing. I could have used my sewing machine, but I liked the look of the hand sewn reinforcement better. I also successfully tacked down the steek with a whip stitch and plan on hand sewing in some ribbon to make it look even nicer in the future.
I was worried because I took a cardigan that was not meant to be steeked with a deep V-neck front and knit it in the round. It worked out pretty well, I will include a detailed description of how I did it below.
1. Followed the pattern as written until all neck shaping was complete
2. CO 5 stitches to create my steek
3. Continued knitting in the round until the body was complete
4. Blocked my cardigan body
5. Used back stitch on rows 1 and 5 as my reinforcement
6. Crocheted a single chain in between rows 2-3 and 3-4
7. Very carefully cut in between row 3, yikes
8. Picked up for the button band in between the body of the cardigan and rows 1 and 5 of the steek
9. Tacked down steeked edges with whip stich and placed a ribbon for further reinforcement
